Rue Baby opens up about internet body-shaming
Kenyan model Rue Baby, who is also musician and influencer Akothee's daughter has opened up about body-shaming, particularly in the Kenyan modeling industry.
In a recent interview with Youtuber Eve Mungai, the svelte-figured Kenyan model said she was body shamed as soon as she won the face of Nivea competition in 2017.
Real name Aggry Dion Okello, Rue says strangers on the Internet have frequently told her she neither has the body nor the height to be a model.
Others commented on her dark skin.
“People said I won because of the fame, I didn’t deserve the title, I don’t have the body, I don’t have the height, I’m too dark, and other bad critics."
According to (age) by being open about it, and turning a deaf ear to negative talk has helped her deal with the body shamers.
“It’s not worth it, I decided to embrace myself the way I am. If the comments are good, I read, if they’re nasty, I move. To grow a thick skin, just ignore," Rue said during the interview.
Rue Baby’s message to young girls venturing into her industry.
“In the industry or not, love yourself as you are. People have lots of problems, you cannot let someone bring you down. There are even haters on Beyonce’s page and we feel like her body is perfect. As long as you love and accept your body, you’re good to go.”
She also thanks her mum for the constant reassurance and encouragement, which ensures she keeps the confidence and the pep in her step.
