Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga under fire for pit latrine billboard
Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga is once again facing criticism over what a section of residents view as unnecessary and extravagant branding.
Governor Kahiga is accused of erecting a massive billboard bearing his portrait and that of Konyu Ward MCA Eric Wamumbi to announce the construction of a pit latrine.
The billboard has attracted the ire of Nyeri residents who are now questioning the county leadership’s sense of priorities.
“Hiyo ni kuwaste pesa ya wananchi…sasa wanafaa waaangalie kitu ingine wanaweza Fanya wasifanye kazi kama hii,” said Kariuki Chege.
The residents also stated that the monies spent on the board and others could have been channeled elsewhere, further adding that the constructed latrine does not warrant the kind of branding it was given.
“Hiyo choo haitoshani na hii boillboard…unaweza kuta billboard inakula kama Ksh.60,000 na choo ni kama Ksh.30,000,” said George Muriithi.
Another resident, Simon Maina, on his part said; “Ukiangalia hiyo shule haina hata hall, mahali watoto wanaweza kuwa ata wanakaa.”
In early April, Nyeri Governor Kahiga faced backlash after branding free sanitizers with his image despite the fact that they had been donated to the county.
Nyeri Deputy Governor Caroline Karugu has since distanced herself from the branding saga terming it a cheap publicity stunt.
