Meru RFC positive after Kabeberi Sevens show

Meru RFC might have lost all their matches at the Kabeberi Sevens but the Division Two side is taking pride in the potential of its young players displayed the National Sevens circuit.

Head coach Patrick Mwika believes his charges showed they can compete against the best with more exposure and better facilities.

“The few points we picked including seven against the eventual runners-up (Menengai Oilers) and seven more against Kenya Harlequins show how much this team can improve,” Mwika said.

Meru lost against Kakamega champions KCB, Impala Saracens and Menengai Oilers in the group matches before losing to Mean machine in the Challenge trophy quarter finals and finally to Kenya harlequins in the 13th place semifinal.

“The the best kind of resources considering the age of our players we can do better, we don’t have training kits or even a sponsor to help the team attend all the tournaments.

“It’s a community team if sponsored we can even perform better, we managed a try and converted against Menengai Oilers, which was the hardest game in our group,” club Chairman Martin Mugambi said

The Meru-based side slammed the tournament organisers for failing to involve them in preparations for the two-day event, which was held in Meru’s Kinoru Stadium and witnessed low fan turnout.

“The organizers failed to involve us in planning and to inform us in advance this has denied our fans a chance to watch us in our first competitive action at home,” coach Mwika complained.

The team is calling on the county government of Meru to chip in and offer financial support.

“After this performance am waiting for comments from potential sponsors,” Mugambi said.

In the third round Dala Sevens set for Kisumu, Meru RFC will battle with Molo, Dagoretti and Bungoma in pool C.
