Mathare beat Chemelil to sail to KPL U-20 quarters
Adan Godana’s late 83rd minute strike is all what Mathare United needed to silence Chemelil Sugar 1-0 and qualify for the quarterfinals from Group B of the KPL U 20 tournament in a clash played at Nairobi’s Camp Toyoyo Grounds on Wednesday.
The Slum Boys lacked the character they showed in their opening match against Tusker FC where they drew 1-1, while the Sugar Millers could not convert the chances created in both halves.
William Muluya’s side eventually found a winner to advance to the top of the group with five points with Chemelil waiting for the later kick-off between Posta Rangers and Tusker to know whether they will join Mathare in the quarters of the age competition.
Mathare found the breakthrough seven minutes from time when Andrew Juma and Mwangi combined well in the middle to release Godana who made no mistake tapping home past a diving Richard Aimo in the Chemelil goal.
“The boys have done well to qualify for the quarters; they are now near the final and all is possible. I can’t mention any specific team as the team to beat, but as the competition grows more fatigue and injuries will be the main challenge to teams,” remarked Muluya, who led the side to finish third in the last edition.
Mathare moved top after drawing with Rangers and Tusker in their opening fixtures of the pool.
The match between Tusker and Posta Rangers ended 1-0 in favour of Rangers.
