Anti FGM Campaign Launched In Samburu
The campaign also seeks to provide a realistic alternative rite of passage for girls in the area.
The chairlady of the Anti Female Gential Mutilation campaign Chelimo Chebii confirmed that female genital mutilation is the worst form of gender based violence to young girls and women in general.
The practice, she said, leads girls into droping out of school, early marriages and early pregnancies.
Samburu county First Lady Lenolkulal said that female genital mutilation is very high in Samburu and that it is the role of everyone to stop it adding that the county government will assist in supporting the girl child education and ensuring that all women and girls in samburu are safe and free from all forms of violence.
During the event 300 girls were rescued and trained on an alternative rite of passage.
The event was sponsored by Amref Health Africa, Amref Tanzania and the Samburu county government.
Female genital mutilation stands at 97% in Samburu County.
