Kenya suspends all sports competitions again in bid to curb coronavirus

President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered the suspension of all sporting activities until further notice as he announced a raft of tightened COVID-19 regulations meant to help contain a third wave of infections. Sports events in the country were already being played behind closed doors and within strict regulations provided by the Government but are now cancelled for the second as Kenya scrambles to get to grips with the latest outbreak. The move could hinder the preparations of Olympic-bound athletes, who have under four months to be in shape for the Tokyo 2020 Games scheduled to begin in July. As of yesterday, the Ministry of Health had reported 126,170 cases and 2,092 deaths in total, according to the health ministry. The president said the positive test rate has hit 22% this week compared to January’s 2%. Kenya’s Harambee Stars, who crashed out of the race to qualify for the AFCON Finals yesterday, are due to travel to Togo for their final qualifying match scheduled for Monday.
