Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Wafula Wamunyni has insisted that the Tuesday launch of his new political faction was necessary to protect the Luhya community from being taken advantage of by other players.

The DAP-K party was launched at the Bomas of Kenya after a faction of Ford Kenya, led by Kanduyi MP Wamunyinyi and his Tongaren counterpart Eseli Simiyu, abandoned the Moses Wetangula-led party owing to much-publicized leadership wrangles.

“The Small party led by Musalia has been used to abuse the people of Western and we have had enough. Both Wetangula and Mudavadi; and they must know that we are going on the ground to ensure we do not let our people be used again,” Wamunyinyi said on the News Night show.

“First of all, we stand for the unity of our country, we would like to see an equitable community, a society where all Kenyans are happy to get a share of entitlement that we are a democratic party. We will be offering more expanded democratic processes allowing members to use our party,”

Wamunyinyi consequently stated that after the fallout with Wetangula, the party couldn’t reform again and as such the need to unveil a fresh new identity. He also dismissed comparisons better the two parties’ apparent similarities.

“Our effort to form the party through legitimate means has been prevented. We were not able to use the tactics employed by the former owner, Wetangula,” he said.

“He has no respect for rule of law. He has demonstrated impunity of the highest order even recently he disobeyed a court order which had stopped us from holding national delegates conference in total contradiction of the court order to hold the NDC this is immunity.”

When quizzed as to why the party chose not to field a presidential candidate at next year’s in favor of endorsing Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja campaign, the party insisted that the DAP-K is a young party that is not interested in filing for a presidential just for the sake of it.

“It became clear that the Presidential race has taken shape and we chose not to field a candidate to prepare ourselves adequately so that when it comes 2027 we can be able to field a candidate for Presidency.”
