Zetech Sparks hold off Makolanders fight back in thriller

Zetech Sparks FC fought off a spirited comeback to edge Makolanders FC 4-3 and record their second win of the season in a FKF Women Premier League (WPL) Zone-A fixture held Wednesday at Gikambura stadium, Ruiru.

In the match held under a scorching sun, hosts Zetech were off to a flying start with Samantha Akinyi scoring inside the first minute before Yvonne Kavere doubled the lead three minutes later when she scored from the spot after Elizabeth Wanyonyi was fouled inside the 18 yard box.

Makolanders would however halve the deficit at the ninth minute through a sensational strike by Harriet Bwire who picked up a beautifully lofted pass to put the ball in the back of the net.

Despite both teams squandering a couple of clear-cut chances, the score line remained the same as teams headed for the break.

Just as the first half, the second half started at an electric pace as Makolanders equalized through Evamia Nyakha who capitalized on a defensive error from Setrine Nelima.

With the teams now held in a 2-2 stalemate, Puren Alukwe restored the host’s lead but Makolanders would press on and were rewarded with a penalty which was converted by Evamia Nyakha on the 62nd minute to take the scores to 3-3

With the game heading to a draw, an attacking display from Zetech earned them a penalty through a handball and spot kick specialist Yvonne Kavere curled the ball to complete her brace, and ensure the home team collected three points.

In his post-match interview, Zetech head coach Bernard Kitolo was relieved with the win, but noted that his team needed to work on the defensive frailties.

“Both teams have been poor defensively. For instance, my defender made two errors which gave the opponents two goals. Even Makolanders were sluggish and that’s why my strikers had good opportunities to score,” Kitolo said.

According to Kitolo, his side will now go back to the drawing board and prepare the team for their next match against Kibera Soccer Ladies FC at the weekend as they seek a top- three finish in the league.

“We will now be going back to training as we prepare for our weekend match against Kibera Ladies. They are tough opponents and we need to ensure that we don’t repeat the mistakes we have made today.

“Our aim is to finish in the top three so that we can get a chance to take part in the playoffs” Kitolo stated.

After four matches, Thika Queens are sitting at the summit of the league as they remain unbeaten.

Ulinzi Starlets are second in the log with nine points as Kayole Starlets are ranked third with six points.
