Zedekiah Zico coy on KCB target

Kenya Commercial Bank Football Club head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno remains confident his boys will have the same good form they showcased before the league took a break due to Covid-19 when football finally gets the nod to restart.

Like all other sports football has been on ice due to the government directive. And prior to it, Zico’s men had been in fine form occupying position two on 30 points from 15 matches, their best start to the campaign in the last four years and Zico is bullish they can maintain this form when the competition resumes.

“My prayer is that when the league resumes we will have the same form as when it stopped but that we also depend on the other teams, especially what they are doing now during the break to improve their performance,” said Zedekiah.

Zico’s charges are right behind leaders Tusker FC who have six more points than them from one extra match.

Zico’s charges have won nine of those matches, drawing three and losing an equal number while scoring 21 goals and conceding 12 in the process.

The bankers made their intentions to clinch the league quite clear, having kicked off the season with a bang after registering six consecutive wins against highly-rated rivals and that’s where coach Zico wants his players to pick up from.

“It’s a matter of wait and see but for us we are very much focused and very committed to achieving our objective which up to now we keep to ourselves. We are very determined to achieve them. That’s why we are trying very much to negotiate through this pandemic and get the best out of the players,” explained the veteran coach.

Although Zico was cagey with the details on the targets, impeccable sources indicate that the management expect nothing short of a podium finish from him and his charges.

Otieno who won the Premier League Coach of the Month award for December, joined KCB in 2019, a couple of years after they gained promotion to the top tier following an impressive season in the National Super League.

Prior to joining the club, Zico had served as assistant coach for close to three years at reigning champions Gor Mahia.

At K’Ogalo, he gained vast experience having been part of the team that clinched back-to-back titles and reached the quarter finals of the CAF Confederation Cup after qualifying for the tournament for the second year in a row.
