Win clean AK, AIU tell Kenyan athletes at seminar

Run clean and win clean- was the clarion call as some 35 athletes drawn from Western and North Rift regions converged in Kitale as the four-day virtual conference on doping kicked off on Wednesday.

The programme is targeting a select group of junior athletes who are preparing for the World Under-20 Championships slated for August 17-22, 2021.

Athletics Kenya (AK) president Jackson Tuwei who addressed the athletes via zoom urged the juniors to maintain discipline and to always uphold integrity in the sport.

“You have what it takes to compete clean and win without using shortcuts. It is also important for young athletes like yourselves to listen carefully and follow what is required of you. You should always try to emulate our legendary athletes who set a good precedent to make Kenya a force to reckon in athletics,” said Tuwei.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) also addressed the juniors with head of education Adityer Kumar urging the athletes to adhere to whereabouts rules which has recently dominated in the latest sanctions.

“I wish to state that Kenya is doing very well in the fight against doping. However, we have few characters that are trying to taint the image of your country. You should always avail yourself for testing as well as avoid use of any substance,” said Kumar.

Also, in attendance was the former 3000m steeplechase world champion Milcah Chemos who doubles as Athletes’ Representative in AK.

The programme will head to Eldoret on Thursday with 45 athletes from Central and North Rift regions set to benefit from the training.

On Friday, some 51 athletes drawn from Nyanza and South Rift regions will converge in Kericho town with the fourth and final event slated for Nairobi on Saturday.
