We wont condone cheats, warns KSSSA boss Ngugi as school games begin

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Secretary General David Ngugi has read the riot act to teams which will be caught cheating during the National Term Two Games which gets underway tomorrow at Kisumu Boys and Kisumu Day schools in Kisumu.

Early this year, KSSSA turned to National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) as weapon of stemming age cheating and impersonation during schools championships but despite the effort, the number of cheat cases at regional school games was still baffling, and Ngugi has warned they want a ‘clean’ competition in the lakeside city.

According to Ngugi, the association has put measures in place which he believes will end the vice after four cases were reported at the regional level.

“We are very serious with this issue which seems to be returning despite the tough rules and other measures we put in place. Those who will be caught will face full consequences and schools should note that apart from winning, these games are meant to nurture talents so mentality of winning through hook or crook should end,” he warned.

The schools which were affected in June are St Peters Mumias from Kakamega, Kibabii of Bungoma, Kwale Girls and Mutewa Boys of Meru.

St.Peters Mumias were stripped of their Western region Under-19 football title after Maliki Boys whom they met in group stages appealed against them and the jury ruled that both St Peters and finalists Kibabii fielded  ineligible players thus slapping with one year bans thus giving Ebwali from Vihiga a chance to represent Western region. Ebwali had finished third after winning the play-offs.

Kwale Girls were also disqualified from this year’s national games for a similar offence during the regional level. The latter who made history last year after winning the football regional title in their first outing in Rwanda, was replaced by the losing finalists St Johns Kaloleni who will represent the Coast region.

Debutants Matiliku will represent Eastern region in volleyball boys after they also won their appeal against Mutewa for fielding ineligible players during the regional level held in Makueni.

Ngugi’s statement comes barely two months after a court scraped the age limit for students at school championships.

The ruling, delivered by the Mombasa High Court, declared age limit in school championships as discriminatory and unconstitutional.

The week-long term two action which ends on Saturday is featuring  football U16, football U19, volleyball, netball, badminton, table tennis and lawn tennis.
