Footballer Waruru: Why I quit the military for civilian life

Former Ulinzi Stars’ striker Stephen Waruru says he quit the military in order to fully focus on his business and football career.

Waruru left Kenya Defence Forces(KDF) outfit Ulinzi FC, a top-tier league side in 2017 and joined Sofapaka where he spent two seasons before leaving for KCB FC.

“It was a personal decision, I wanted to concentrate on my football career and develop my business, and I have never regretted making that decision.

I will always be grateful to the military for the chance they gave me; the training they took me through and how they supported me in my football career –  is always the best I have ever had ,”he said.

The striker who is also a plumber says he does not regret quitting the military as he is enjoying running his business that he began 5 years ago, with the skill he learnt while in the military.

“I have been running my plumbing business for the last five years, I also have a hardware store in Thika that we have partnered with my friends – so far we are enjoying the business growth and we hope to expand it more and more,”Waruru added.

With the Kenyan Premier League suspended, Waruru has a message of advice to his fellow athletes.

“Have some extra hustle because one day the football career will end and it’s always good to have something that will support your life thereafter,” he said in an interview on The Hot 96 Arena.
