Vihiga spank Nzoia as Posta, Wazito fire blanks

Vihiga United picked their first win of the 2020/21 FKF Premier League season beating Nzoia Sugar 2-1 in a competitive match played at Mumias Sports Complex, Kakamega County on Sunday afternoon.

Striker Dennis Wafula scored Vihiga’s first goal from the penalty in the third minute before Wandera Gabriel equalized for Nzoia Sugar in the 43rd minute, but the 17-year-old Lensley Otieno had the final say to earn Vihiga maximum points.

Elsewhere in Nairobi, Posta Rangers and Wazito shared the spoils in a barren draw while KCB shocked Kakamega Homeboyz 2-0.

Sammy Okoth, Vihiga United coach, said in a post-match interview that he was impressed by the performance of his boys terming it a “satisfaction”.

On the victory, Okoth said that change of game plan made them claim the three points, singling out the plan to have skipper Patrick Okulo begin from the bench.

“Nzoia Sugar are taller than us, they are speedy, I had no other alternative other than using the speedy boys who would look for the ball and focus on pushing the experienced players forward,” explained Okoth, adding that the win is a stimulant to his boys. “We needed to win, the boys had to know and believe that they are capable, we have achieved that, I am confident that the boys have picked up and willing to fight, even more, the team spirit displayed is a motivation and gives me hope to keep fighting,” the former Zoo Kericho tactician concluded.

On his part, Nzoia Sugar head coach Sylvester Murukurwa says he is confident and impressed with the game as his boys played according to the plan. He, however, says that the loss was due to misuse of scoring chances from his forwards.

“The boys have played well, they have displayed an amazing game, I am confident and still believe in them, we played a winning match but wasted most chances that the opponents used.

Conceding the first goal was a letdown but that will be addressed immediately we get back to the camp,” said Murukurwa, confident of bagging all the three points in their next assignment.
