Vihiga Queens leave Cairo heads high despite exiting CAF CL at group stage

VIHIGA QUEENS

The first batch of the Vihiga Queens team returned in the country early Monday from Cairo where they took part in the inaugural Caf Women Champions League in Cairo, Egypt.

The contingent of 18 included players and three officials who arrived at 2:00am aboard Egypt air and proceeded to their Nairobi camp in Kenya institute of Special education (KISE) while the rest of the contingent is expected to check in on Tuesday.

Vihiga left Cairo heads high despite missing the semi-finals ticket they were chasing, promising to give a better fight in the next edition of the Champions League.

“Our aim was to qualify for the semi-finals but unfortunately we lost. We have shifted focus to our preparations for the next assignment. Egypt was good experience for me; they are better compared to our country in especially in terms of sports infrastructure,” striker Topister Situma.

Off the pitch, Vihiga go back home with fond memories of the historical city of Cairo.

“It was a very nice experienced for us, I was just reading in the history books about Egypt without knowing that one day I will physically visit the country. It was also my first time to board a plane. We managed to visit the Pyramids of Cairo,” said Selim Chemutai, Vihiga Queens Defender.

The Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Egypt led by Ambassador Otieno Joff also hailed the ladies urging the Government for more support.

“When I heard that the team is coming to Egypt to compete in CAF tournament I was extremely happy and that’s why today within my busy scheduled I have come to congratulate you. We as embassy we are proud of you and I’m urging the government back at home to continue supporting girls football,” said Amb. Otieno.

Vihiga finished last in Group B with three points, level with River Angels of Nigeria who also exited as Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and Morocco’s Asfar proceeded.

Asfar will on Tuesday evening clash against Hasaacas Ladies form Ghana at the AL Salaam Stadium as Malabo Kings from Equatorial Guinea will play Mamelodi Sundowns at the 30 June Stadium both matches kicking off at 5:00pm.
