Varsity sides in Egerton for KUSA homestretch

Egerton University will host the fourth leg of the Kenya University School Association Games (KUSA) this weekend with the title up for grabs for the top four teams in the 12 team log.

Masinde Muliro University of Science Technology (MMUST) and Kenyatta University (Blak Blad) will renew their rivalry having scooped the top honours after three legs that have seen team’s transverse the country in search of the best varsity rugby side.

Blak Blad and Mean Machine are the most decorated and superior varsity sides but the fast rise of MMUST as a top dog brings an interesting dimension to the circuit.

MMUST have been just as dominant winning the first leg where they beat rivals Blak Blad 17-10 in the finals of the Nyeri leg before going on to lose 10-5 in the Mombasa leg to Blad before a 31-21 loss to the same team in the just concluded Kaimosi leg.

Both teams have won all the Cup titles in this year’s KUSA edition and have met three times Blak Blad with an upper hand with the latest win coming during the just concluded Kaimosi sevens leg.

MMUST on their part have won the first leg of the KUSA sevens in Nyeri at the Dedan Kimathi University leg while Blad won the TUM 7s hence leaving both teams at the peak of the 12 team log.

Heading to this leg both teams will be aware of the importance and the weight of the Egerton leg, with the winner likely to be crowned this weekend after three weeks of gruesome rugby across the country.

However there is a possibility of tacticians fielding less experienced players ahead of the local National sevens circuit which kicks off next week on the 20-22 July in Nakuru with the Prinsloo Sevens first.

With Mount Kenya University, Machine, Egerton and USIU all falling twice to Blad and Mmust at the semifinal stage in the played legs by a close margin the fourth leg promises to elicit fireworks.

Blak Blad as they are fondly known in the rugby circles are tied on points with (MMUST) with the pair having won all the three opening legs and the Egerton leg will surely determine boys from men.

From Egerton, action heads to the penultimate final leg at the University of Nairobi where the overall and eventual University rugby winners will be crowned.
