Uncertainly holding back plans of basketball coaches ahead of new season
The uncertainty and lack of a clear time frame for the resumption of sports in the country has negatively impacted on the plans of Ulinzi Warriors basketball team head coach William Balozi.
Balozi says that with no clear roadmap for sports resumption, the team has not been in a position to resume small group training.
This has also impacted on his transfer plans as he’s yet to sound out possible transfer targets or drop players who may have been deemed surplus to requirements, as they still await the findings of a taskforce formed by Sports CS Amina Mohamed to advise on the way forward.
Amina formed the taskforce two weeks ago amidst pressure from stakeholders to give a way forward on the resumption of sports activities which have been put on hold since March when the country recorded its first case of coronavirus
Balozi’s sentiments have been shared by KPA ladies basketball team coach Mike Opel and Equity Bank men team counterpart Carrey Odhiambo, who are also yet to roll out any training plans.
“Currently we have stopped everything including training, buying and selling of players,” Balozi whose side bagged the title last term said.
The basketball league was to start in March but was put on hold due to Covid-19 pandemic which interrupted the global sports calendar.
Opel, on his part, added: “We are just waiting for the findings of the taskforce that was set by the ministry of sports to know what next but for now nothing is going on,” Opel told Citizen Digital.
Meanwhile, Equity Bank’s men team head coach Carrey Odhiambo said they were planning to make changes in the team but because of the impacts of the novel coronavirus and lack of sports activities they’ve been left with no option but to await the taskforce report.
“We are not sure if we will play this year but my players are doing individual training and I am always monitoring them via WhatsApp where they send videos and advise them accordingly,” said Odhiambo.
Elsewhere KCA-University men basketball team is currently doing individual training and sharing their videos on WhatsApp groups where the head coach Victor Okello monitors their progress.
