Ugandan remanded in Kisumu amid match-fixing probe

Ronald Niwagira, the Ugandan national arrested over the weekend on accusations of match-fixing will spend another five days in police custody as a probe into the allegations continues.

Kisumu Law Courts Senior Magistrate Wilfrida Kemunto Ongunya has granted investigation officers’ request to have the suspect held after DCI officers investigating the matter told the court that the suspect cannot be released on bond since he is a flight risk.

They had initially asked the court to allow them to detain him for seven days to complete the investigations before he can take a plea.

The investigating officer swore an affidavit that match-fixing is rampant and will fracture the country’s football industry thus the quest for more time to investigate how deep the match fixing has grown.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday by DCI officers disguising themselves as soccer players after he had promised the Western Stima side cash in return of a loss to KCB in the FKF weekend fixture.

He gave the team Sh10,000 for ‘lunch’ with a promise of USD 5000 if they went ahead and lost the match in the exact manner he wanted.
