Tusker set for Kinoru switch despite concerns over state

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and Gotv Shield Cup champions Tusker Football Club are set to relocate to Kinoru Stadium in Meru County this season despite qualms that the facility is not in a good condition to host any top flight matches.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Tusker FC CEO; Charles Obiny oozed optimism that the 10-time league winners will relocate to Kinoru before the new campaign kicks off.

He dismissed claims that the stadium is in dire condition despite renovations that have been ongoing for the past two years.

“We are going back there, that’s not a problem. We will be going down there to inspect the ground and we are convinced we will relocate this season,” Obiny quipped.

Obiny added that they have been in constant communication with the Meru County officials who are overseeing the renovations and lauded the works being done on the ground saying Kinoru will be their new stomping ground as they look to defend the KPL and Gotv Shield titles they won last year.

“The work going on there is superb, and in two weeks time it will be complete. We will surely move and we intend to use it for both training and home matches.” Obiny reiterated.

Fresh works restarted in December last year after a new contractor was awarded the tender to complete the renovations with the construction of the terraces still underway.

Phase 1 of the Kinoru renovation works was expected to comprise of a standard pitch with a race track and 20,000-seater terraces.

Phase 2 of the project is to include recreation facilities such as shopping stalls, restaurants, a police post and roofing of the pitch; all of which are currently incomplete.

Our effort to reach the Meru County Executive Member in charge of Youth, Gender and Sports; Ms Joy Karui Muriungi were futile, as she declined to talk to the press.
