Tragedy hits National School Games as Muhuri School student drowns

The National Secondary Term One Games will this morning begin in Mombasa on a sad note following the untimely demise of  Muhuri Muchiri Secondary School student who drowned at Mtwapa Creek, Indian Ocean on Monday evening.

Confirming the incident, Kisauni OCPD Julius Kiragu said the 17-year-old student, Daniel Mokua was among other rugby 7s team players that left their accommodation village at Shimo La Tewa High for a swimming expedition along the beach, when he was swept by the strong currents in the Ocean.

The OCPD said the teacher who had accompanied the students to the beach has since been arrested and is being held at Bamburi police station for sneaking out the squad to the beach without permission.

“The team was supposed to be in Shimo La Tewa where they are supposed to be camping but they sneaked out to the beach without permission. The tragedy happened in the evening and investigations are ongoing,” he told Citizen Digital.

Muhuri School, who are the Nairobi Region runners up were scheduled to start the campaign for the rugby 7s  title against Khamisi from Western on Tuesday 1pm but the incident could affect their kick-off fixture.

The incident comes days after Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Belio Kipsang, issued a stern warning on ensuring all the students were safe during the games.

Kipsang warned that teachers and officials would be held accountable in case of any malpractice as safety of all participants must be assured.

Meanwhile, the term one action is featuring basketball, hockey, rugby 15’s, rugby 7’s, swimming, handball, cross-country and athletics.
