Top guns Kiprop and Kipruto to light-up Discovery Cross Country race

Preparations are complete for the 27th edition of the Discovery Cross Country that is scheduled for January, Sunday 28th in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

Speaking to Citizen Digital at the Eldoret Sports Club, Athletics Kenya Central Rift chairman Abraham ‘Solo’ Mutai said that they are expecting over 3,000 athletes to participate in the annual event.

“The field is ready and word is out there about the Discovery Cross Country. I expect a big turn out tomorrow (Sunday) since most of the athletes who a targeting a slot in Team Kenya for the Africa Cross Country and Commonwealth Games will come here to gauge their training.

Some of the top guns expected to grace the event include Beijing 2008 Olympics and three-time 1,500m  World champion Asbel Kiprop who is targeting African Championships in Nigeria  (August 1-5) and the IAAF Continental Cup slated for September 8-9 in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Olympic and World 3,000m steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto will also light up the men’s race.

In the women’s race, 2015 IAAF World Cross Country champion Agnes Tirop and Lilian Kasait Rengeruk will test each other after a thrilling performance last Sunday during the fifth leg of the IAAF World Cross Country in Spain.

Tirop won the race in 25 minutes, 51 seconds, ahead of Rungeruk who clocked 26.01, while Olympic 5,000m silver and World champion Hellen Obiri settled for third place in 26.03.
