Tigoi retain hockey title in county school games
Tigoi Girls hockey team have successfully defended their title as champions of Vihiga County with a 100 percent record in the ongoing Vihiga County Secondary Schools Term One School Games after beating Madira Girls 3-0 on Friday to amass 12 points.
Tigoi had already been declared champions on Thursday after crushing Vokoli Girls 4-0 but they put the gloss on the impeccable performance with the Friday win.
Madira, on five points, prior to the Friday clash, had hoped to win the match to be guaranteed the second spot and a ticket to the regionals but their dreams were nipped in the bud as the runners-up position is now up for grabs– with Kaimosi and Vokoli — all on two points locking horns today(Friday) with the winner having a realistic chance of qualifying.
Tigoi had also won against Kaimosi Girls and Mudavadi Girls with 5-0 and 6-0 scoreline respectively.
Head coach Moses Wawire was left purring after retaining the crown.
“We are happy to defend the title. My players have showed remarkable improvement; from one level to another. We are advancing to the regionals on high spirits and we are hoping for national championship comeback,” he said, adding that, “We hope God will give us victory all the way to the East Africa Championship.”
Team captain Gloria Atema who emerged the top scorer with six goals also couldn’t hide her feelings. “We are happy and we will continue training hard so that when we go to regionals and the nationals, we perform well since our target is East Africa Championship.”
Viola Atieno who bagged four goals thanked God for the victory.
Meanwhile, defending basketball champions Tigoi Girls have qualified for semis after winning all their group stage matches. They won 56-11, 53-12 and 76-9 against Bunyore, Emanyinya and Shalom respectively.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, team coach Ken Egovwa expressed his joy.
“We are feeling okay. We have qualified for the semis. Our target is on the regionals so that we qualify for the national championship,” he noted
Tigoi are joined in the semis by Bunyore Girls, Kaimosi Girls and Ibubi Girls.
