Stung by poor Kenya Cup show, Quins roll out plans for next season

After failing to nail a playoff spot in the 2019/20 Kenya Cup season, Kenya Harlequins head coach Dominique Habimana says they’ve begun preparations for next season.

Quins had a disappointing campaign finishing at position nine with 27 points, which was not enough to earn them a playoff slot.  Only the top six finishers earn the nod.

The playoffs are primed for next weekend where Kabras Sugar, KCB, Homeboyz, Resolution Impala Saracens, Stanbic Mwamba and Menengai oiler are going to compete for the Cup honours – Kabras and KCB sailing straight to the semis – by virtue of finishing first and second respectively in the regular league.

Quins poor run is a sharp contrast to the 2018/2019 season when they finished at position three in the regular league with 53 points from 16 matches.

“The next season has begun; we are in the pre-season aiming to re-evaluate plans for the next season,” Habimana said.

Habimana is a highly successful and experienced coach, having been part of the coaching team that led Quins to a Kenya Cup title in 2008.

As coach, he won a Cup double in 2014 – the Kenya Cup and Enterprise with Nakuru RFC. Habimana was also the Kenya Simba’s forward coach between 2012/2013 and 2015/2018 before rejoining the Quins in September 2019.

“What I found when I came was that they had not put time for the pre-season, I believe next time we will do better. When you start off badly in the pre-season it will haunt you all through the season,” he reckoned.
