St.Peters Mumias crowned Kakamega County football champions

Vinedine Ambetsa’s goal in the 12th minute was enough to give St Peter’s Mumias their first ever County football trophy after beating Emanani 1-0 in an entertaining clash played at Musingu High on Saturday.

Dressed in their yellow shirts and black shorts, the Saints came on to the pitch as favorite with opponents Emanani being the underdogs after the former thrashed defending champions Kakamega High 3-0 in group stages in their first match on Tuesday.

Huge crowd was witnessed with most of the people travelling all the way from Mumias and Kakamega for the finals after the semi finals had been moved from Kakamega High due to hostility of fans.

St Peters were much offensive in the better part of the first half with the goal coming through Ambetsa who collected the ball from a pass placed by Kevin Agai and tapped in an empty net.

In the 37th minute, St Peter’s were dealt a blow when their right-back Omar Somombwana was shown a second yellow to send him out for an early shower; first half ending at 1-0 .

Second half was a game of defence on the Saints side while Emanani came to force an equalizer.

Emanani head coach Patrick Fundi called on Isaiah Saili for Omondi John who was injured in 57th minute with St Peters also making a substitution, sending Ainea Ndeto in for the injured Mangeni Cyprian .

Against the run of play, the Saints retreated to hold the ball to frustrate Emanani whose effort to get an equalizer were unfruitful with St Peters becoming the new champions and will represent the county with Emanani also qualifying by virtue of being runners up.

St Peter’s coach Mustapha Rajab expressed his joy for the win.
“We had our own plan, but the red card slightly changed our tactics. However, I am grateful to God and the boys for the hard work. We are now targeting to go to East and Central Africa”.

Goal scorer Ambetsa Vinedine dedicated the goal to the entire St Peter’s Mumias family.
“We are celebrating as a team and as a a school for we have come from far. We are now focusing on the regionals ,” he told Citizen Digital.

Emanani coach Silvanos Wesonga hailed his boys for the achievement.
“We are happy and am grateful for the achievement. We hope to win the regionals. Our boys are hard working in football despite many challenges they have”.

Enroute to their win, St Peters pulled a surprise of the tournament by thrashing Kakamega High 3-0 then managed to see off the hard to crack side Lugusi High 2-1 and then defeated Lubinu Boys 2-0 in the last group A match.

In the quarters, the Saints played Butere High winning 5-3 on penalties after a one all draw and finally edged out Kakamega Township 2-0 in the semis.
