Soy leave it late to sink Shabana

Soy United scored two quick-fire goals in the second half to defeat giants Shabana 2-1 on Sunday at Bukhungu Stadium to arrest their recent poor run of form in the National Super League (NSL).

The victory will add a welcome impetus to a team struggling for form and was before they met with Shabana dangling on the drop zone after collecting nine points from a possible thirty in their opening ten games.

They endured an indifferent first half where they created little to threaten their visitors and things got worse for them when Fred Nyakundi “Malouda” made the most of the mix-up in the box to poke home to give Shabana the lead in the 70th minute.

However, they quickly turned the game on its head through a well-taken free-kick and a tap in from close range moments later to spark wild celebrations from the players and the home fans at the Bukhungu Stadium.

Head coach Samwel “Oti” Twago attributed their victory to their ability to stick to their plans.

“Both teams were nervous in the first half and we had to be resilient when they scored the opener.

“Am happy for the boys because they responded well to my instructions and for them to come back against one of the best teams in the league is for sure the best reaction.”

Shabana could not have envisaged such an outcome given their 2-1 loss in the hand of league Leader Kenya Police last week.

Billed as a game in which they lay a marker in their contender credentials, their display in the last quarter an hour will give their manager food for thought.

They allowed in two easy goals one from a set-piece and another for their slow reaction in the box thereby condemning them to their consecutive loss on the bounce.

Head coach Joseph Ongoro rued a lapse in concentration for their latest setback in their bid to make a return to the Kenya Premier League.

“We are mature enough to accept defeat because it is one of the three outcomes in any given match.

“We reacted poorly once we took the lead and they punished us for our lapse in focus.”

The glamor boys will hope to return to winning when they host Nairobi Stima next week at the Gusii Stadium while Soy will be at home to Migori Youth.
