Slain Olympian Tirop to be laid to rest this Saturday

  • Tirop was found murdered in her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County last week.
  • According to Athletics Kenya Central Rift Vice Chairman Barnabas Kitilit, an autopsy is set to be conducted on the body of Tirop on Tuesday.

The late Agnes Jebet Tirop will be buried on Saturday in her parent’s home in Nandi County.

Tirop, the 2015 World Cross Country champion was found murdered in her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County last week.

According to Athletics Kenya Central Rift Vice Chairman Barnabas Kitilit, an autopsy is set to be conducted on the body of Tirop on Tuesday.

“We are still in shock following the untimely demise of our athlete in the Central Rift region. We however take heart and continue with preparations so that we can accord her a befitting send off,” said Kitilit.

“The committee was set on Friday and includes our chairman and secretary general of the Central Rift region. The dates have already been set and tomorrow we expect an autopsy to be done on her body then we have a Harambee on Wednesday and thereafter she will be laid to rest on Saturday at her parents’ home,” said Kitilit.

Meanwhile, an Iten court on Monday ruled that Ibrahim Rotich who is the prime suspect in Tirop’s murder case will remain in custody for 20 days pending completion of police probe.

Rotich, who was the husband to the deceased, was arraigned before Magistrate Charles Kutwa where the prosecution sought for more time to detain him.

The court directed that the accused be detained at Railways Police Station in Eldoret. He will also undergo a mental assessment at Eldoret Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The case will be mentioned on November 9.
