Shujaa stun England to storm Vancouver Sevens semis

The national sevens team upset the odds as they inflicted a 12-0 pinch on England to storm into the Vancouver Sevens Main Cup semi-finals on Sunday.

The result ensured Shujaa will now meet USA in the last four as Fiji meets champions and series leaders South Africa in the other semi.

There was an injury scare early on for Kenya as Collins Injera clutched the region around his ribs in pain following an awkward landing after he had risen run contest a high ball.

The influential speedster was applauded off the pitch moments after team doctor Lameck Bogonko had helped him back to his feet.

A quick penalty take from Eden Agero set up Oscar Ouma for the first try for head coach Innocent Simiyu’s charges with the skipper running under the posts as Oliech added the extras.

The scoreline stood at 7-0 in favour of the Kenyans at the break with Injera returning to the pitch in the ninth minute.

Billy Odhiambo sliced through the England defence like a knife on butter to score at the far right following some neat interplay involving Injera with Agero missing the conversion.

England tried their luck but unfortunately time was not on their side as they spilled the ball Dan Sikuta collecting the ball to kick it away off the field to end the quarterfinals proceedings.

USA poses some interesting opposition for Kenya as it is coached by former Shujaa boss Mike Friday who is responsible for nurturing notable talent in the squad including Willy Ambaka, Ouma and Dan Sikuta.

It is the first Kenya has qualified for the Main Cup semi-final since 2016 when they won the Singapore Sevens title.
