Shujaa fall to South Africa in Solidarity Sevens final

Shujaa lost 31-7 to South Africa in Sunday’s final of the first leg of the Rugby Africa Solidarity Sevens at the Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch.

David’s Selvyn made two successive tries for the Boks score but the hosts failed to convert either of them and Kenya clawed back on that lead through Alvin Otieno’s converted try. It ended 10-7 at the interval.

Soon after the break Angelo Davids sidestepped the Kenyan defence to score a converted try on the left corner of the field as the South Africans stretched the scoreline to 17-7.

Substitute Christie Grobbelaar scored the fourth try of the day with a kick and chase to score a superb try.

With the clock ticking it was clear Kenya were unable to bring out their A game in the final and handling errors proofing to be a thorn in the flesh for the Innocent Simiyu charge’s.

Youngster Ruhan Nel capitalised on the handling errors by Shujaa as he pounced on a loose ball to score the final try of the day handing the hosts the coveted trophy.

The participating teams will have a week of training and Polish up before return to action over the weekend for the final tournament of the Solidarity campaign.

Prior to the final Kenya had lost to the Boks on the first day of the competition 27-14.

South Africa 2 scooped third position with a comfortable 26-7 win over Uganda in the playoffs.
