Sakaja Foundation takes over Nairobi United Football Club

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced a major transformation for Nairobi United Football Club, as he takes control of the National Super League (NSL) side through the Sakaja Foundation.

Speaking on Friday when he announced the takeover, emphasized his commitment to supporting the club through the Sakaja Foundation but stressed the importance of discipline and a winning mindset among the players.

"You will never lack anything. I want you to wake up, work, and think football. Put all your energy into this; I believe in winning. Let’s be winners," Sakaja told the team during the announcement.

"Be your brother’s keeper, maintain the right mindset, and together, we will be winners. That is the story of Nairobi United," he added.

Sakaja expressed his vision for the club to join the FKF Premier League, asserting that with hard work and dedication, this goal is achievable.

"We must work together—no slacking. If you slack off, we will replace you. But if you work hard, the team will grow," he warned.

In addition to his plans for Nairobi United, the governor highlighted his administration’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure in the city. Apart from the already completed Dandora Stadium, ongoing work on the Woodley and Kihumbuini stadiums is expected to finish soon.

The transformation of Nairobi United will include significant investments in training facilities, the recruitment of new talent, and enhanced support for the club’s management and players.

"Nairobi United has immense potential, and we are committed to making it a team that can compete with the best in the country," Sakaja stated.

The team finished fourth last season, just one place below the FKF-Premier League promotion bracket.

They got the new campaign off to a flyer with a 2-1 win away against Mombasa Stars and are seeking to build on the momentum when they host Nzoia Sugar at Dandora Stadium on Saturday.

Osman Abdi, a key organizer from the Sakaja Foundation, reassured the team of the foundation’s commitment to meeting its needs, adding that plans are in place to establish an academy to nurture young talent.

"This will be a great team. We want to assure you that young footballers will also be included in this initiative, mentoring them to become seasoned players," said Osman.
