Saints shine to quarters as Kakamega fight for dear chance

St Peters Mumias stormed to quarter finals of the Kakamega County School Games Wednesday after securing a hard fought 2-1 win over Lugusi Boys in a match played at Kakamega High.

The Saints were put ahead by Somombwana Omar who scored through a penalty after a Lugusi defender handled inside the box.

The lead did not last for long as Lugusi, through Lawrence Otieno ‘Olunga’, beat St Peters defence to score a wonderful goal to make it level.

Few minutes to half time, the Saints pushed Lugusi into their own half with Timona Jeff converting a loose ball in front of goal to restore the lead.

The second half was played with much of the ball in the midfield with both teams looking for a goal which proved futile; the Bernard Onyango coached side securing a place in the quarterfinal.

Today’s win coupled with a 3-0 against Kakamega High in the opener was enough to send them to the last eight.

According to Saints head coach Bernard Onyango, his boys have passed a tough test after registering their second win against a hard to crack side.

“We prepared knowing that there is no easy team in this tourney because every representative fought for the ticket.

Kato (Atem) had been a marked man with his moves failing to yield fruits but we had another plan and that is why we have had new scorers today.”

On his part, Lugusi coach Mwachi Kana blamed the referees’ calls terming them unfavourable to his team.

“I’m not happy with the referees’ calls .We lost.We accept the defeat and now our focus is on the last game against Kakamega.

Elsewhere, Kakamega’s Green Commandos hammered Lubinu Boys 8-0 with Henry Mejja scoring a hat-trick and Steve Biko netting a brace.

The win means that Thursday morning tie against Lugusi is expected to be fascinating and intense since the winner will automatically go through to the quarters.

Like Kakamega,Lugusi High has won a single match after they thrashed Lubinu boys 6-0 in the early kick off match played at the same venue.

Volleyball and netball games start on Thursday.
