Rovanpera throws down the gauntlet at Safari Rally shakedown
Current World Rally Championships (WRC) standings leader Kalle Rovanpera
showed skill and intent as he led the shakedown standings by five hundredths of
a second ahead of Hyundai's Thierry Neuville, and Ford's legendary driver
Sebastian Loeb.
Rovanpera had earlier finished 9th fastest in the
first round of shakedown but improved his time to show clear resolve of edging
his elder Toyota counterpart and last year's winner Sebastian Ogier.
Ott Tanak went fourth fastest and Ogier could only
manage fifth position three seconds adrift of Rovanpera.
Most drivers admitted that this year's edition
would be way tougher with America's Sean Johnstone co-driven by Alexander
Kihurani of Kenyan descent saying "It's something I have never experienced
before."
Action proper begins Thursday at Kasarani's super
special stage after the official flag off at the Kenyatta International
Conference Centre, KICC in Nairobi.
