Revitalised GSU bounce back with crucial win in Tunisia

General Service Unit (GSU) got back on track in the ongoing men’s African Clubs Championship in Tunisia after registering victory in their Monday’s fixture while fellow countrymen KPA failed to make it two wins on the bounce.

The record national volleyball champions saw off Nigeria Customs by 3-1 sets to revive their chances of reaching the quarterfinals of the annual championship which served off Sunday in Tunisia’s capital Tunis.

GSU suffered a major setback on their Group ‘D’ opening fixture after falling to five-time champions Zamalek on straight sets but they bounced back in style to dispatch the Nigerians with sets of 23-25, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-18 at the Sidi Bousaid indoor arena.

Head coach Gideon Tarus termed Monday’s performance as ‘masterclass’ ahead of their final preliminary match against Espoire of Congo on Tuesday. GSU will secure a last eight slot if they pick maximum points.

“Poor reception hurt us yesterday (Sunday) and we tried our best to rectify the mistake but it was late and Zamalek is an experienced team so we couldn’t match their prowess. However, we’ve today ensured we got it right and the three points will be vital ahead of our must win match tomorrow. The boys are upbeat and I believe we will make it to the quarter finals,” he told Citizen Digital.

At Zouaoui arena, GSU’s compatriots KPA succumbed to hosts Esperance 3-0 sets (25-27, 25-11, 25-13) with the defeat complicating their chances of qualifying to the quarter finals.

KPA picked two points in their opening fixture against APR of Rwanda after the tie served up a gripping five-setter ending in favour of the Mombasa based side and Monday’s defeat means they must win in straight sets in their final Group ‘A’ fixture against Rukinzo of Burundi Tuesday.
