Raila, Mudavadi expected at Kadenge burial

ODM leader Raila Odinga and Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi are among mourners expected at the burial of former football star Joe Kadenge.

“Deputy President William Ruto will lead the government in the burial with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi also expected to attend, ” Chris Kadenge, the deceased’s nephew said.

“Central Organization Trade Union (Cotu) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi and host governor Wilbur Otichillo are also going to be present,” he added.

The funeral ceremony is to be conducted at Gisambai Primary School followed by the burial at his home in Soliani, Vihiga.

The ceremony is expected to begin at 10.30am and end at 3pm.

AFC Leopards legends among them Maurice Sunguti, Omar Shaban and Nicholas Muyoti will also be in attendance.


Veteran sports journalist and broadcaster Jack Oyoo Silvester will be the MC at the event.

He is renowned for his rich experience as a football commentator in Kenya during the days Kadenge was showcasing his prowess.

Oyoo and Leonard Mambo Mbotela, another veteran broadcaster, coined the ‘Kadenge na Mpira’ fame, originating from a style of play hinged on holding onto the ball.

Kadenge, a former AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars died on July 7 at a Nairobi hospital.

The Confederations of African Football (CAF) observed a minute of silence in an Africa Nations Cup match between Algeria and Guinea during the knock out stage in Egypt on the very day he died on July 7.
