Players didnt do enough to safeguard Kenya Cup status: Bulls coach

Western Bulls RFC head coach Solomon Obiero says lack of finances and player commitment led to their relegation from Kenya Cup.

The western based side got relegated over the weekend following their 56-06 loss to Menengai Cream Homeboyz with Obiero claiming that players only showed up during match day.

“Our training sessions wasn’t easy because financing players to go for the training was difficult so less players showed in the training sessions while others just showed up on match day,” he regretted.

“Sometime only eight players out of the 23 came to training which led to misunderstanding of players during match day,” he revealed painting a grim picture that marred their campaign, adding that lack of finances to cater for players allowances was a challenge, but the biggest of it all, was lack of commitment from his charges.

He went on: “It was sooner than expected to go down to the championship league after it took us many years to earn promotion so we’ve got to put our house in order to come back to Kenya Cup.”

Bulls were relegated together with Kisumu RFC a year after they were both promoted to the top tier.

They have won only three matches out of 15 and sit 11th with 13 points, seven points ahead of last placed Kisumu RFC and eight points behind 10th placed Nondescripts.

“It won’t be easy for us in the championship since we will lose some big players who will leave the club to join outfits in the top-tier since they want exposure,” said Obiero.

Western Bulls face seventh placed Top Fry Nakuru in their last Kenya Cup match this weekend at the Athletic Club, Nakuru, and Obiero believes they will win to finish the league on high.

“Definitely we will go for a win because I believe travelling to Nakuru won’t be for just honouring the match but to finish the league on high.”
