Olympic medalist Jepkirui suspended for doping

Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa has become the second Kenya-born Bahraini to be handed suspension from athletics for doping after 3000m steeplechase Olympic champion Ruth Jebet.

The 34-year-old 2016 Rio Olympic silver medalist has been issued with a notice of allegation following the Presence of a Prohibited Substance (EPO) as in Article 2.1 of the World Anti-Doping (WADA) code.

Jepkirui’s sample tested positive for banned blood-booster Erythropoietin (EPO) as confirmed by the IAAF’s Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Tuesday.

She won the silver medal in Rio after her former neighbor in Kapsabet, Nandi County Jemimah Jelagat Sumgong took home the Gold medal but has also since been suspended, making it a first in the Olympics.

Earlier last year former 3000M steeplechase record holder Jebet received her suspension with her case being referred to the IAAF Disputes tribunal after being found with a case to answer for breach of the IAAF Anti-Doping Rules.

Jebet who won a Bronze for Bahrain at the 2015 World championships in Beijing, China left Kenya in 2013 to join the Asian nation.
