Okoth floors Sergei to reach semis in Russia

Nick “Commander” Okoth has defeated Ukrainian Kishko Sergei on points in their 51kgs quarterfinals contest to advance to tomorrow’s semis of the Konstantin Korotkov Memorial Boxers’ International Cup in Khabarovsk.

Okoth stopped Sergei after five rounds, winning the bout 29-28, 30-27, 30-27,30-27, 30-27 and will now face Russia’s Ovik Oganisyan in the semis.

Olympic bound, Ongare lost to Diana Gorishnaya of Estonia through unanimous points, 28-29, 27-30,27-30 in the three rounds to lose the fly weight fight .

Her counterpart Elizabeth Akinyi abandoned her welter weight 69KG fight against Dominican Republic’s Maronta Hernandec in the second round after sustaining a cut in his mouth.

Elly Ajowi is the only Kenyan pugilist yet to enter the ring and is due for a face-off with Mamadiyar  Saydrahimov of Uzbekistan in tomorrow’s semi-final heavyweight fight.

Fresh from winning a gold medal in the Africa Zone Three Boxing Championships in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo in March, Ajowi says he is ready ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan.

Ajowi will fight against Mamadiyar Saydrahimov of Uzbekistan with the winner meeting Yociness Baalla of Morocco or Russia’s Aleksey Zobin in the final.
