Oilers thrash Quins to storm Kenya Cup playoffs

Menengai Oilers qualified for the Kenya Cup playoffs quarter finals after demolishing Kenya Harlequins 39-13 at the Moi showground Nakuru on Saturday.

It was an intense game after their neighbours Top Fry Nakuru dislodged them in the sixth place on Friday after getting a walkover from already relegated Western Bulls.

But Gibson Weru’s charges scored six tries converting three plus a penalty against their opponents who had two unconverted tries plus a penalty to finish sixth with 41 points three points ahead of Top Fry Nakuru.

Timothy Okwemba got the first highlight of the match running on the right side of the pitch with a spectacular hand off to Quins Brian Ndirangu but was stopped at the 18 meter yard by opponents defense in the ninth minute.

Full back Mark Kwemoi was the first to score points for the host in the 14th minutes through a penalty to give Oilers a 03-00 lead.

In the 20 th minutes it was all about kicks both teams trying to penetrate their opponents.

Oilers number eight Samuel Were was sun binned in the 30th minute giving Quins a lineout which resulted to the first try of the match by hooker Patrice Agunda skipper Dominic Osino missing the extras to make it 05-03.

Brian Oyiego scored the second try for Quins sprinting in the left side of the match to land it at the top left corner Nick Ndegwa missing the conversion to make it 10-03 in the 38th minute.

Former Impala Saracens full back Mark Kwemoi brought Oilers back to the match after a well played maul by Gibson Weru charges adding the extras to make it 11-10 for the host in the 40 th minute.

Okwemba scored a solo try after two successful hand offs against Quins opponents Kwemoi missing the extras to make it 15-10 at halftime.

It was a slow start in the second half but with the support of home funs their favorite Mark Kwemoi scored a penalty to extend their lead to 18-10 in the 53rd minute.

Substitute Brighton Mwalawa scored a penalty for Quins to bring the scores croser to 18-13 in the 60th minute.

Javan Ateh extended Oilers lead with a try after a successful maul Kwemoi adding the extras in the 64th minute to make it 25-13.

Azziz Annan gave Oilers a playoff off ticket after a well played line out Kwemoi doing what he likes most converting it to make it 32-13 in the 76th minute.

Substitute Andrew Odero scored Oilers last try Kwemoi adding the extras to make it 39-13.
