Mwenje: Circuit has become more competitive than ever

KCB RFC head coach Dennis ‘Ironman’ Mwenje believes that the National Sevens Circuit has improved over the years.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Mwenje said that the change of new winners is testament to the competitiveness of the competition

The bankers won back-to -back titles in the year 2013 and 2014 but since then there has been new winners in Top Fry Nakuru( 2015), while  Menengai Cream Homeboyz bagged the crown last year.

“KCB is always challenging for the title and in my honest and biased opinion we have done well,” he said, adding: “Internationally the teams are playing the same way; whether New Zealand, Australia, Wales and England. And you find that in the local circuit, the same is being replicated. So it’s a step in the right direction for our rugby development.”

The 2014 champions are in Pool C with Top Fry Nakuru, Blak Blad and the hosts Kisumu in the last round of the National Sevens Circuit to be played this weekend in Kisumu.

At the same time, the former Shujaa player pointed out that they are not afraid of their biggest pool opponents Top Fry Nakuru who are fourth in the standings, six points ahead of them.

“They (Top Fry) are a good side but as KCB we believe in our abilities. We don’t get distracted by looking how greater a team is,” Mwenje explained.

“We have won before; we have taken on all the teams so there is no more hiding in the field,” he added.

KCB has won just one series this campaign and their head coach believes that reaching the quarter finals this weekend can help them win the national circuit.

“We have a realistic chance, the quarter finals game has always been our determinant game so once we cross the quarterfinals we have a chance to win the cup.
