Mwanja to be named Shujaa coach report

Dennis Mwanja is set to be named the next Kenya Sevens head coach after Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) settled on the KCB RFC assistant coach, Citizen Digital understands.

Mwanja will fill the position previously held by New Zealander Paul Feeney who left Shujaa in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mwanja has been picked ahead of Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu who had applied for the post but his actions in the Paris leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series in the season 2017/18 when the players covered the Brand Kenya logo from their jerseys as protest for non-payment might have worked against him.

Paul ‘Pau’ Murunga also applied but his performance during his tenure as the Shujaa head coach in 2018 did not convince the board.

Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua who deputized former head coach Paul Feeney did not apply for the role.

After his retirement as a player in 2014, Mwanja coached Thika RFC where he led them to the top flight for the first time in 52 years finishing the season unbeaten.

Commonly known as ‘Iron Man’ he switched to varsity side USIU Martials; doubling as an assistant at KCB RFC.

Mwanja, a former Shujaa assistant is currently the KCB sevens head coach as well as deputizes for 15s boss Curtis Olago.

The two have led KCB to three Kenya Cup titles and two Enterprise trophies among other local accolades.

He also won the National Sevens circuit series last year as the head coach of KCB sevens team.

The Musingu High School alumni played 147 matches for Kenya 7s at the HSBC World Sevens Series scoring 285 points from 57 tries.
