Munala banking on Chebet in KCB glory hunt
KCB head coach Japeth Munala believes Loreen Chebet could prove to be the wild card his team needs in their pursuit for Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) glory.
Chebet signed for KCB from defending KVF champions Kenya Prisons two weeks ago and Munala is convinced the middle blocker has the quality to push the team to the next level.
The KVF league enters second leg on Friday at the Kitui School Grounds in Kitui County where KCB will pick up their challenge for the title against titans Prisons and Kenya Pipeline.
Last year KCB finished second behind Prisons, ending a 10-year spell in which the top two places have entirely been occupied by the current champions and Pipeline.
KCB did not participate in the first leg held in Kitale following commitments in the African Championship where they finished ninth and will kick start their season against champions Prisons from 9.00am before facing former champions Kenya Pipeline.
“My squad had many new faces prior to African Championship and after the continental exposure I think the team has integrated well. I am sure Chebet is going to be of big help to us,” Munala told Citizen Digital.
At the same time, rebranded Kenya Army who were penciled to play Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and Prisons have withdrawn from the second leg due to military commitments. Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who finished fourth last season will play KDF.
In men’s contest, 13-time champions and record holders GSU who finished ninth at the African Championship will start their quest to retain their title against newcomers Nairobi Prison and Mombasa based Kenya Ports Authority.
Last year’s runners up Kenya Prisons will start their quest to end GSU’s dominance against Equity Bank before winding up the leg with fellow service men Nairobi Prisons.
After the league matches, teams will battle it out for Kitui Volleyball Tournament sponsored by Kitui County Governement on Saturday and Sunday in the same venue.
The subsequent KVF rounds will be held in Uasin Gishu, Taita Taveta, Busia, Narok, Laikipia and Nandi counties in that order.
