Morans sink Ivorians to book quarters tie against Tunisia

Tyler “Durango” Okal sunk game-high 24 points to fire Kenya basketball team to a slim 85-83 rout of Ivory Coast to advance to the quarters of the ongoing FIBA AfroCan competition in Bamako, Mali.

Stoppage time jump shot from basketball ace Tyler Okal sent the Kenyan side to the quarters after both teams tied on 83 points with 23 seconds left to play, after Ivorian Aristide Anselme Otto sunk a 3-pointer to cancel Morans three-point lead.

Ivorians outbattled the Morans 20-23 in a tough opening quarter before Okal poured 9 points in the second period to thump Ivorians 23-21 with Ronald Gombe and Desmond Owili playing a pivotal role.

The west African side however bounced back to thump the Kenyan side 17-19 in the third quarter, Aboubakar Traore posing a threat by capitalizing on the rebounds but Morans managed to seal the victory after a spirited fight leading to a 25-20 triumph in the fourth quarter to edge out winless Ivorians.

Moran’s Ronald Gombe sunk 18 points, Tom Wamukota 8 points while Desmond Owili and Griffin Ligare sunk 7 points apiece.

Morans will today face Tunisia who received unswerving qualification to the quarters after topping Group D which also had Egypt and Guinea.
