Mombasa County gives nod for indoor games restart

As a way of opening up the economy in the coastal city of Mombasa, the County Covid-19 emergency response committee has announced the return of indoor games.

According to Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo who also doubles up as the committee chairman, the indoor games will only be allowed to have two or three players.

Games such as Badminton, Table Tennis, Darts and Draft are some of the allowed games but they must also adhere to the guidelines outlined.

“Not every game will resume but those are played without any contact and fewer people involved,” explained Kitiyo.

At the same time Kitiyo has asked other players of various sports disciplines to await a directive from their committee or the national government before returning to the fields.

“Soccer is still prohibited for now because it attracts a lot of people. until it is officially announced, they remain suspended,” he added.

His sentiments came just after Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said he was unable to declare when he expects sports events to resume in the country, signaling a lack of elaborate restart plans for the industry.

Elsewhere sports stakeholders in Mombasa are appealing to the government to quicken the return of other sports especially soccer.

Abdallah Harun, a local youth football coach in Nyali, Mombasa has advised the government to learn and copy practices from other countries on how to have football activities restart. Soccer  draws a fanatical following in Kenya.

“I think we can learn just from our neighbours Tanzania, and elsewhere like England, and Spain, for us to go back to our normalcy.”

Sports activities were put on hold countrywide immediately Kenya reported its first Corona virus case in March this year.
