MMUST raring to go as Kenya Cup season draws near

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) RFC have been outstanding for the past three seasons and the team will be looking to unlock new possibilities as the new Kenya Cup season draws near.

Head coach Dr Ahaya Ochieng says the target is to finish in the playoff slots and while he admitted they had a below par national sevens circuit campaign, it conditioned the players for the upcoming season.

“We are quickly adapting to the fixture and we will take every team as it comes and accord them the seriousness they deserve. This time we are having very difficult home matches; that is in terms of playing very established sides at home, so that may be the only difference from last year.

“In terms of conditioning it was so relevant and also in terms of getting the experience. So it has pushed us towards where we want to be,” Ochieng said adding that he has a full squad to train with.

That may change when the transfer window opens and the league’s top clubs begin rolling out their recruitment drives.

“Training has been okay and the boys are raring to go. Officially no player has left the team because the transfer window is not yet open so we still have our players unless other teams are interested in some; I am made to understand that’s the case so we are yet to cross that bridge.” Ahaya added.

The boys from Lurambi kick off their 2022/2023 Kenya Cup campaign with a university derby away to Strathmore Leos and will be hoping for a perfect start if they are to build momentum for a play-off charge.
