Mathew Kemboi and Judith Korir win Kakamega Forest Marathon

Mathew Kemboi from Elgeyo Marakwet is the new Kakamega Forest Marathon champion.

Kemboi won the 42 kilometre race staged on Saturday in Shinyalu Constituency, crossing the finish line in 2 hours 19 minutes and 38 secs beating his closest rivals Josephat Bowen and Henry Kiprop who came second and third respectively.

In the women category, Judith Korir, also from Elgeyo Marakwet came first ahead of Jackline Atudonyang and Agnes Jeruto from Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi counties consecutively.

Bowen covered the race in 2 hours 19 minutes and 53 seconds.

This being his first win after finishing second in the last year’s marathon, Kemboi was elated with the  victory noting that his aim is to do better in future races.

“I want to thank God for the victory, I’m very happy for winning this race and I want to say I have achieved my target of finishing a step higher than last year,” he said.

Kemboi who won Vienna Marathon this year also noted that he will be more than willing to participate in future races.

In the women’s 21km race, Vivian Chepkirui finished first in 1:16:23 while Naomi Chebet came second in 1:16:28 as Agnes Keino settled for third place in 1:16:40.

The Kakamega Forest Marathon aims at conserving Kakamega Forest under the partnership of Kakamega Forest Heritage, Citizen TV and Mulembe FM.
