Mathare, Homeboyz share spoils in barren Bukhungu stalemate

Francis Kimanzi’s Mathare United missed out on the chance to close in on league leaders Gor Mahia at the summit of the Kenyan Premier League table after battling Kakamega Homeboyz to a barren draw at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on Saturday.

Both sides fluffed the few chances that came their way, in a match bedecked by numerous injuries and cautions.

Mathare, second on 26 points prior to Saturday afternoon matches would have hauled their points tally to 29, a touching distance of Gor on 30 points who however have three games in hand.

From the word go it was clear this was going to be a tightly contested match. Mathare goalie Robert Mboya was forced to make a full stretch save to deny Esiye from a long range effort  early on in the first half, while returning skipper George Owino played a crucial role when he denied Homeboyz striker Allan Wanga, clearing from the line in the 46 minute.

Elsewhere, Kariobangi Sharks rallied from behind to snatch a point in a 1-1 draw with Zoo at the Kericho Green Stadium, as Nzoia Sugar and Chemelil Sugar settled for a 0-0 draw in a sugar-millers derby in Sudi.

In Kericho, star-man Nicholas Kipkirui put his side into the lead in the first half before Shaphan Oyugi replied after the breather for the visitors to ensure for shared spoils.

At the Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa, it was also a tale of missed chances as hosts Bandari and visiting Posta Rangers battled to a 0-0 draw.
