Mathare dance to sweet-savoured win at Chemelil Sugar

Mathare United climbed upto third on the Kenyan Premier League standings albeit provisionally after hammering cash-strapped Chemelil Sugar 4-1 in a KPL encounter staged Sunday at Muhoroni Stadium.

Crispin Oduor opened Mathare’s account with a 20th minute strike before James Kinyanjui added another five minutes to the break, and Clifford Alwanga (57) and Daniel Otieno (97) also found their names on the score sheet to seal the win, hauling their points tally to 17.

David Simiyu scored the consolation goal for the home team in 89th minute.

Chemelil began strongly and had a clear chance to assume the lead in the second minute but striker David Simiyu shot was well cleared by Mathare keeper Job Ochieng.

Another chance for the millers beckoned in the fifth minute through Pablo Oduor who had a one-on-one chance with Mathare keeper but he sent his shot wide.

Mathare created chances of their own too in the early interval but failed to utilize them until the 20th minute.

After the interval, Mathare coach Salim Ali made two changes bringing in Tyson Otieno and Francis Omondi for Clifford Alwanga and James Kinyanjui respectively piling more pressure to the home team.

The results leaves Chemelil rooted at the bottom of the standings with one points having given two walkovers against Bandari and KCB.

“The game was not fair at all, we had situations where the referee refused to award us a foul; not once but I hope going to the next match they will be fair enough.

“We have lost because my players have not been motivated, there’s been hardship paying them and this is because our sponsor Chemelil Company has no money,” said Chemelil coach Charles Odero.

His counterpart Salim Ali was however pleased with the victory, he said: “I thank my boys for the win, this is my first match we’re winning with a huge number of goals, we came from defeat in the hands of Sofapaka but here we have done it by grabbing three points.
