Makwatta double steers Leopards second in KPL

John Mark Makwatta scored twice and provided another as AFC Leopards thrashed Chemelil Sugar 4-0 in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clash played at the Mumias Complex on Sunday.

Soter Kayumba and Tresor Ndikumana scored one apiece either side of Makwatta’s double with the result pushing Leopards into second on the KPL standings on seven points, one behind Western Stima.

It piled further misery on Chemelil who have now lost all their opening three matches and left them rooted at the bottom of the table having conceded 11 goals thus far.

In Kericho, Wazito FC picked up their first win of the season after defeating Zoo 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Victor Ndinya and Elvis Rupia.

Elsewhere Dennis Odhiambo and Kennedy Owino were on target for KCB FC in their comeback victory over Kakamega Homeboyz who led through Allan Wanga’s early strike at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Head coach Casa Mbungo will be happy to see early signs of progress and new signings Makwatta – who has now scored in two successive matches – and Ndikumana proving their worth for Leopards.

Captain Kayumba put Leopards ahead with a simple tap in after turning home from Eugene Mukangula’s corner kick in the 17th minute. Makwata added the second in the 33rd minute to put Leopards 2-0 up by half-time.

Paul Were came on from the bench for Boniface Mukhekhe in the 58th minute to increase speed and trouble to the opponent few minutes after a Tresor Ndikumana goal to make it 3-0.

Makwata added his second and fourth goal for Leopards in the 63rd minute after making a sublime dribble from the centre of the pitch to unleash a rocket past Chemelil goal keeper Onunga Bernard leaving the sugar millers helpless.

Chemelil only threatened with three minutes left on the clock with Tindi Biko’s coming off the post back into the field of play where no one attacked the rebound.

The visitors finished the match with 10 men after Musa Oundo was sent off for a dangerous foul play.
