Leopards players in go-slow

AFC Leopards players have staged a go slow demanding payment of their January salaries.

Citizen Digital understands the playing unit returned to the capital Nairobi on Monday from  Taita Taveta County where they beat Taveta All Stars 6-0 in an FKF Cup round of 32 match and were to report to their training base at Cambridge University in Karen Tuesday morning.

They however opted against it, as protest over delayed payment of their dues.

A player who sought anonymity confirmed the development even as officials remained tightlipped for the better part of the day.

The 12-time champions have been on a solid run this season winning six of their nine matches.

Leopards monthly budget stands at around Sh4 million. They are on a three-year shirt deal with a gaming firm which ropes the team some Ksh40 million annually but the figure is not enough to meet their expenditure.

Politicians led by Amani National Congress  leader Musalia Mudavadi have frequently channeled their support to the team coffers with the team collecting Ksh 1.7m from the February 12 funds drive, all aimed at taking care of the wage bill.

Additional funds have come from Football Kenya Federation which pumps around Ksh 250,000 monthly as part of the league broadcast deal.

The go-slow comes barely a week after the resignation of interim head coach Antony Modo Kimani.

Leopards’ former defender George Sunguti who played for the club between 1987-1995 has meanwhile asked the management to come out openly and inform members of the state of affairs.

“We as members can contribute money and pay the players because they are performing very well, something that should be consistent. We are shocked to hear of players staging a go slow at this moment. We are expecting them to continue winning and move closer and closer to the title,”Sunguti lamented.
