Laiser Hill to defend national 7s title against Upper Hill

Rugby Sevens defending champions Laiser Hill will on Friday face Upper Hill in the finals after the two teams won their respective semi-finals in the third day of Term One National School Games, at the Shimo La Tewa Secondary School and Shanzu Teachers College, Mombasa.

Rift Valley’s Laiser saw off Kerugoya 38-0 in quarter finals before edging out Vihiga 22-7 to set up the much-awaited final against the Nairobi champions, who in their road to the finals, dispatched Muvuti of Eastern 12-07 before beating 2015 champions St. Peters Mumias 12-10 in the quarters and semi finals respectively.

This is the first time the two sides are meeting in the sevens finals, while it will be the debut final for Upper Hill who clinched their maiden 15s title last year.

In a post-match reflection, Upper Hill head coach Thomas Wagwe said his charges can dare to dream for their first ever sevens title after clearing the semis hurdle.

“We have inched closer to winning the title and I believe we can, although Laiser Hill appears to be on fire. We have to be very careful in every second of the 14 minutes,” told the coach.

In rugby 15s, Eastern region champions Kangaru and Alliance joined Kakamega and Dagoretti in the semis after winning sealing runners up spots in their respective matches.

Kangaru finished behind seven-time champions Kakamega in Pool ‘B’ while Central’s Alliance settled for second in pool ‘A’ led by Nairobi champions Dagoretti.

In the last-four on Friday, 2016 East African champions Kakamega will be up against Alliance while 2010 runners up Kangaru will face a tricky fixture against fast-rising Dagoretti.
