KWPL: Ulinzi Starlets to beef up squad as first leg ends

Ulinzi Starlets head coach Joseph Wambua is planning to strengthen his squad by signing two more players as the first leg of the Kenyan Women Premier League (KWPL) campaign comes to an end.

According to the tactician, the midfield department is the only sector which needs to be strengthened and he’s already identified two players whom he expects to sign before the transfer window closes.

“From the seven matches of the first round, I saw that we are weak in midfield and that’s why I have decided to bring on board two players. They are all local and very experienced,” he said without revealing their identitities.

At the same time the Ulinzi completed the first leg in style hammering Zetech University 5-1 on Saturday at the Stima Members Club and are now placed second with 15 points, six behind leaders Thika Queens. Gaspo are third with 13 points, one ahead of fourth placed Kayole while Zetech University completes the top five with 10 points.

This was the fifth win for Ulinzi who so far have lost twice against Thika and Gaspo.

Speaking after the match, Wambua hailed his charges for a ”good job done” urging them to work harder heading into the second round early next month.

“We went to the match knowing that a loss against our opponents Zetech will force us to finish in the third position and that’s why we couldn’t let it go. I congratulate my girls for good display and I am urging them to maintain the same spirit as we wait for the commencement of the second leg.”

The second leg is scheduled to kick off on the weekend of March 6 2021 with Ulinzi travelling to Thika to face host Thika Queens.

Elsewhere at Stima Members Club, Kayole Starlets defeated Kibera Girls 2-1 while Thika Queens emerged victorious against stubborn Mathare United Women as Gaspo hammered Makolanderes 5-0 at the same venue on Saturday.

In Zone B Vihiga Queens who defeated Trans Nzoia Falcons 3-2 last Saturday at the Kenyatta Stadium in Kitale  tops with 19 points while Trans Nzoia Falcons and Wadadia occupy second and third positions respectively with 13 points each as Nakuru Queens FC and Kisumu All Starlets completes the top five with 11 points apiece.
