KRU to blame for Shujaa’s horrific outing in Dubai- Ayimba
Former Shujaa head coach Benjamin Ayimba believes lack of enough preparation and motivation from the Kenya Rugby Union were the major contributing factors to Shujaa’s poor performance in the opener of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai last weekend.
According to Ayimba, the Kenya Rugby Union dilly-dallied in selecting a new coach, a situation he added was compounded by allowing Shujaa’s six experienced players to join the Simbas for the World Cup repechage.
Kenya Sevens speedster Collins Injera, Willy Ambaka, Dennis Ombachi, Andrew Amonde, Sammy Oliech and Nelson Oyoo– all featured for the Simbas in Franc e effectively denying Shujaa the experience and pedigree in their squad
“The team was selected late and the new coach was confirmed six weeks to the tournament which made them have poor preparations.”
“We were lagging behind because the players that Paul ‘Pau’ (Murunga) went with were not experienced enough… we didn’t have a chance,” Ayimba explained.
“Those are senior players and you can’t make an overhaul of the whole team and in this case it wasn’t voluntary, it was by force because the players were in France for the World cCp qualifiers, leaving the coach with only one option,” lamented Ayimba.
Ayimba also pointed a finger at the Union for not contracting the players .
“How much can you expect from someone without a contract? You can always demand a lot from the players but without giving them motivation the results will always be poor.”
Ayimba however believes the team will post improved performance at the Cape Town Sevens this weekend in South Africa but won’t make it to the main cup quarter finals.
Kenya will take on Dubai 7s bronze medalists England, Fiji and France.
“Our pool is very difficult, maybe we will improve our play but the result will not be much different. I know the players will push themselves and the coach will push them but to be honest it will be difficult in South Africa.”
Paul Murunga will try to improve the team’s horrible performance in Dubai where they lost all their matches finishing 15th with a paltry point.
